The price of newspapers in Japan is unreasonably protected. The two systems mainly support their profits pushing the high cost to readers though youngsters have stopped to follow the tradition noticing the stupid system.
First, it is the no-discount resale system that stops the free competition of the price. The newspapers' price is quite protected under this capitalistic society (seemingly).
Recently, Japan Fair Trade Commission tried to rethink about the specific designation with which newspaper companies can keep the original price though the suggestion was quite rejected by the industry and some politician who are getting the profits from them.
And the system of the specific designation is encouraging the newspaper companies to force distributors to purchase papers more than the actual number of sales. This has been letting the advertisers and readers pay expensive money in order to keep their profits.
They are afraid of losing the profits. This means that they know the current value of the newspapers by themselves. If the free competition where other industries have joined long time ago already starts in their industry, they have to face the reality that they have been avoiding. The sales will go down and down.
So many people can use internet in this modern society. Why do we have to stick to the paper version? They must be able to reduce the crazy high labor cost and great amount of waste if they seriously join the free competition. In that phase, they will finally begin to try to make efforts to differentiate their articles.
If they want to get back the status of media respected by readers, they have to break the bad and old habits completely before they claim other companies or government's inefficiency.
Thank you for visiting <(_ _)> and Have a great day!!
